It is made from fermenting a strain of red yeast called monascus purpureus over organic rice to achieve Monacolin K. Red yeast rice naturally contains Monacolin K, which is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor. As a natural treatment, it is to reduce low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol ("bad" cholesterol).
