Kinetin is a naturally occurring plant hormone classified as a cytokinin. It was the first cytokinin discovered and is derived from adenine, one of the building blocks of nucleic acids. As a cytokinin, kinetin promotes cell division and differentiation, particularly in meristematic tissues. It is involved in promoting lateral bud development, shoot proliferation, and root initiation.
