Product Description:
Colourless crystal or white crystalline powder. Slightly hygroscopic. Decomposes above the melting point. Soluble in water, very slightly soluble in ethanol and acetone, almost insoluble in concentrated acid. Hydrochloric acid and nitric acid can reduce its solubility in water. Density 3.24g/cm3, melting point about 590°C. Refractive index 1.572. Refractive index 1.572, strong oxidising property. Moderate toxicity, LD50 (rat, oral) 355mg/kg.
Application:
Characterisation of sulphuric acid and chromic acid. Barato is a dense explosive consisting of barium nitrate, TNT and a binder. Flash powder obtained by mixing aluminium powder and barium nitrate is explosive. Barium nitrate mixed with aluminium thermite gives aluminium thermite type TH3, which is used in hand grenades (aluminium thermite grenades). Barium nitrate is also used in the production of barium oxide, in the vacuum tube industry and in the manufacture of green fireworks.
